ILOG JRules
IBM WebSphere ILOG JRules provides functionality to build and deploy rule-based applications for Java, mainframe and SOA-based environments.

Developers can easily build and deploy rule-based applications that automate fine-grained, variable decisions used by business systems, while reducing the time, effort and cost of application development and ongoing maintenance.
- A comprehensive development environment for rule-based applications that is built on the Eclipse IDE (Rule Studio).
- Powerful functionality, including: auto correction in rule editing; conflict and redundancy detection; wizards and configuration tools for creating testing frameworks; and source code control integration.
- The ability to easily extend rule projects for ongoing management to business users through IBM WebSphere ILOG Rule Team Server.
- A robust, scalable and secure execution engine for rule-based applications, with a managed deployment and monitoring environment (Rule Execution Server).
- A complete set of execution capabilities, including: a high-performance and scalable rule engine, providing either inference or sequential-based rule execution; hot deployment of changes into production without having to restart the server; one-click deployment of rulesets as web services for SOA-based integration; monitoring through the administration web console or through JMX-based connectivity to enterprise system management tools, such as IBM Tivoli.

The WebSphere ILOG JRules BRMS product family consists of:
- IBM WebSphere ILOG JRules
- Rule Studio – Eclipse-based development environment
- Rule Execution Server – Managed execution environment - IBM WebSphere ILOG Rule Team Server – Business user rule management environment
- IBM WebSphere ILOG Decision Validation Services – Testing, Simulation and Audit functions integrated with Rule Studio, Rule Team Server and Rule Execution Server
- IBM WebSphere ILOG Rule Solutions for Office – Guided authoring and editing of rules through Microsoft Office Word and Excel
Benefits of the WebSphere ILOG JRules BRMS family
- Reduces the amount of time, effort and cost required to develop and maintain applications by separating business decision logic from core application code.
- Makes decision logic easily accessible and re-useable across the organization.
- Rules are stored and managed in a centralized repository, with comprehensive capabilities for querying and reporting on rules and associated metadata.
- Rules can be defined in a customizable business vocabulary using a variety of rule metaphors, including decision tables, decision trees, scorecards and text-based rules.
- Tools and environments are designed specifically for the unique needs of different stakeholders involved in rule management—Line of Business personnel, Business Analysts, Systems Developers, and IT Operations. - Enables decision logic to be defined with increased granularity and precision, increasing automation in business systems and ensuring that systems make the right decision based on the context and requirements of each individual customer, transaction or activity.
- Provides industry-leading governance of business rules, allowing users easily to understand how and where rule changes affect decisions within operational systems, as well as to assess the business impact changes

New Features in the 7.0 release of the IBM ILOG JRules BRMS family
The 7.0 release of the WebSphere ILOG JRules BRMS provides the capabilities you need to create, change and deploy rules with confidence — maximizing the productivity of everyone involved in rule management throughout the enterprise, enhancing the partnership between non-technical business and IT teams, and allowing fast, flexible implementation of automated decisions.
Create with confidence
The WebSphere ILOG JRules 7.0 BRMS adds integration with Rule Solutions for Office, so business users can author and edit rules within Microsoft® Office Word and Excel. Rule Solutions for Office “ruledocs” allow users to maintain rules in familiar, easy-to-use desktop applications, while at the same time providing a full understanding of the vocabulary and structure of the rule project for which they are associated.
By installing lightweight Rule Solutions for Office plug-ins for Microsoft Word and Excel, users get specific business rule functions and panes, as well as IBMs “Intellirule” technology for guidance and auto-completion. WebSphere ILOG Rule Team Server supports full bi-directional importing and exporting of ruledocs, so rules can be maintained offline and then managed inside the BRMS rule repository.
Change with confidence
WebSphere ILOG Decision Validation Services, a new component, brings powerful new capabilities for rule governance. Business users can test accuracy and simulate business impacts to verify rule changes and deliver the intended results, all directly within Rule Team Server’s collaborative, centralized rule management environment. Technical users can quickly set up testing and simulate scenarios using Decision Validation Services’ customization project editors and wizards for Rule Studio to define data input and output, key performance indicators (KPIs), and outputs that will appear in Rule Team Server.
Decision Validation Services also brings a new functionality to the Rule Execution Server with the addition of the “Decision Warehouse,” providing query and report capabilities for the rule execution audit trail.
Deploy with confidence
Business rules can be easily deployed as cross-platform decision services or they can run within the widest range of operating environments for distributed and mainframe systems. Moreover, rules can be compiled for use in legacy COBOL applications. Take advantage of IBM WebSphere ILOG Rules for COBOL 7.0, which adds optimized code generation for rule flows and decision tables, along with additional methods for handling numeric computations in COBOL copybooks.
